An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese Type 82 command and communications armored vehicle. It is not a combat machine in the usual sense: its job is to carry commanders and communications equipment, to keep contact on the move and to give a protected workplace in the field. The model is released by Trumpeter in 1:35 scale and thus fills out the range of modern Japanese vehicles, which is otherwise thinly represented.
The Type 82 was brought into service at the beginning of the 1980s and is among the first wheeled armored vehicles of Japanese domestic design. It has a six-wheeled chassis with all-wheel drive, which gives it a good cruising speed on the road and decent cross-country ability at the same time. The hull is open at the top only where the weapon is mounted; otherwise it is closed and protected against splinters and small arms fire. The defensive armament is limited to machine guns. Inside there are workstations with communications equipment and map tables, which go with the conspicuous antenna fit on the outside of the vehicle.
On a wheeled vehicle the key thing is to line the axles up so that all the wheels sit in one plane – dry-fit on a sheet of glass. Paint the wheels separately and glue them on only once the hull has been sprayed. The antennas are thin and break off easily, so leave them to the very end; anyone who wants to can replace them with taut fishing line or thin wire. Japanese two-color camouflage has hard transitions, so rely on masking. The weathering holds best on the wheel arches and the lower part of the hull.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
