Sand tires differ from ordinary off-road ones in what is expected of them. On a loose surface there is no point in digging in deep; on the contrary, the tire has to float on the surface, and that is why these tires have a wider footprint, a softer sidewall and a shallow pattern with lengthwise ribs instead of sharp blocks. German units used them in North Africa and in the Balkans, and the light staff car managed even the tracks where it would have bogged down on ordinary tires.
The package holds five complete wheels and one part of the front axle torsion bar. The designation V.2 distinguishes this form of the tire from the two others that came out in the same line, so the same car can be built in three variations without two vehicles being indistinguishable from each other.
The soft sidewall of the tire bulges under load on the real car. A molded part does not have that shape, because the mold has to be symmetrical on both sides, or the wheel could not be released. A casting can be shaped more freely: the sidewall can bulge differently at the top than at the bottom, and where it touches the ground the surface flattens into a patch. The car then stands on the model on an area rather than on a point, and that is a difference even someone who has no idea why will notice.
The material is hard and more brittle than polystyrene, so a fine strip of sanding paper suits it better. Under a thin coat of primer the surface looks like rubber with no further work.
All it takes is a change of wheels and the same car suddenly belongs in a different scene. Dust and the shade of the tire will do the rest of the work for you.
