About product

The S13 interior for the moldings of a rival tooling

The same car has been released in plastic by more than one firm and each of them divided it into parts its own way. The instrument panel ends in a different place, the tunnel has a different section and the seats a different backrest angle. That is exactly why two separate interior sets appear for one car, differing only in which moldings they suit. This one is matched to the Aoshima tooling.

The cut of the pieces is therefore the main parameter. The artwork does not end at random but exactly where the plastic part has its edge, so after application there is no overhanging edge and no bare spot left. That is at the same time the limit of its usability: on moldings of another origin the pieces have to be shortened, divided and filled in with paint.

The execution is typical of this brand. The graphics of the dials, the lettering of the controls, the texture of the upholstery and the stitching are printed and at the same time have a microscopic height, so the interior does not look like papered-over plastic but like molded and sprayed plastic. The metal elements, which do have an adhesive layer of their own, add glossy framing and small plates.

It is worked like a decal: wash the part and coat it with gloss varnish, cut the sheet up into individual pieces of artwork, soak each one separately in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slide it off the backing paper into place. The printed artwork has no adhesive layer of its own; on a broken-up area a drop of cyanoacrylate glue helps. Do not use a decal softener or a decal fixer, as the chemicals attack the printed resin, and do not leave out the gloss varnish, because the part will not hold on a matte surface. It is better to work from the large areas toward the small details and to let each layer dry through, otherwise a neighboring piece will lift when another is moved. The model of the car is obtained separately.

FAQ

Every plastic tooling divides the interior differently. The pieces therefore have to match particular moldings, otherwise they overhang or do not reach the edge.

Usually yes, if the division of the parts has not changed. Before soaking it is a good idea to lay the piece in dry and compare the outline.

Let the layer dry through and only then carry on. A wet neighboring piece lifts when it is handled. Do not reach for a decal softener to settle it, as the chemicals attack the printed resin.
