This injection-molded plastic kit from Trumpeter covers a combination for recovering and carrying heavy tracked vehicles: a wheeled tractor of the MAZ family in the form designated MAZ-545 and the ChMZAP-5247G semi-trailer that goes with it. The combination is one of the longest models that can be built in 1:35 scale and makes a finished scene in itself.
The Minsk Automobile Plant supplied the army with a range of heavy all-wheel-drive tractors that came about precisely to move tanks and missile equipment away from the railway. Vehicles of this family have a low cab with no windows in the rear wall, a long frame and massive wheels with external air lines to the tires. Semi-trailers of the ChMZAP series have long been paired with them: they have folding loading ramps, several axles and a flat deck onto which a tracked vehicle drives under its own power or is pulled by the tractor's winch. Combinations of this type served throughout the Cold War and can still be met with today in upgraded form.
Build the frame of the tractor and of the semi-trailer on a flat surface and keep checking that all the wheels sit down. It is practical to paint the wheels aside and to fit them only after the paintwork is finished. Unify the base with primer and lay the base shade on with an airbrush. On areas this large, graded shading and gentle edge highlighting show to advantage. Concentrate the weathering on the wheel arches, the deck of the semi-trailer and the loading ramps, where the most mud and wear collect in service.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
