The real subject

The Merkava is an Israeli main battle tank with the powerplant at the front and the crew behind it. The fenders and the bins on their baskets are the most heavily worked parts of the outside of these machines: they bend against the terrain, take knocks while reversing and while loading, and in service they become the mark of one particular vehicle. That is exactly why a tank with the straight fenders from the box often looks too tidy.

Building and painting tips

• Cut the original fenders off the kit only after a dry fit, so that you know where the new parts will seat.
• The parts are not polystyrene, so bond the joints with super glue.
• Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little from the part and sand the remainder off.
• Wash and degrease before painting, then pick the damaged places out with a darker wash and a hint of bare metal.
• Small cargo, a tarpaulin or crates suit the open bins, so that the space does not look empty.
