This injection-molded plastic kit from MiniArt captures the German Raupenschlepper Ost (RSO) tracked tractor in the last production version. The RSO/01 was a fully tracked cargo tractor designed for the heavy going of the Eastern Front. The kit in 1:35 scale comes with decals for several marking options; the exact contents of the box, meaning the number of parts, photo-etched parts and schemes, differ between editions, so they are not stated here as certain.
The Raupenschlepper Ost, literally tracked tractor East, came about as a response to the mud, snow and churned-up roads of the Eastern Front, where wheeled vehicles got stuck. Steyr designed a simple, fully tracked tractor with good cross-country performance, used mainly to tow guns and to carry ammunition and supplies. Thanks to its reliability and mobility it became a popular helper of the German army; the late production versions simplified the construction to save material and time.
With tracked vehicles, assemble and paint the running gear and any interior before you close the body. The tracks and the chassis take weathering well with washes and pigments for the mud and dust effects typical of the Eastern Front. A good primer, thin cement for plastic and an airbrush for an even base are all advisable. Straighten and glue the fine parts with deliberation.
