Vallejo 1:35 Wood Texture No1 Stencil - a stencil for wood texture

A stencil from the Spanish brand Vallejo with a wood grain motif cut into it. It is used anywhere a smooth plastic or plaster surface should look like a plank, a crate or a beam: on the floors of sheds, on pallets, on the beds of vehicles and on diorama bases. It is an aid for making dioramas, not a paint and not a kit - you create the grain with your own medium and the stencil only decides where it goes.

Use

• First paint the area with a light base in a wood tone and let it dry through completely.
• Lay the stencil on along the direction of the grain and press it down over its whole surface.
• Apply the darker tone with an airbrush at an angle along the length of the grain, not across it - the result is a softer texture.
• Once the stencil is removed, go over the area with a dry brush in a lighter tone, so that the grain stands out.

Work tips

Wood in 1:35 scale must not have a grain as pronounced as the one we see on a real plank - the fibers would correspond to beams half a meter across. Keep the contrast low and rather repeat several fine layers. Every plank should have a slightly different tone; if you turn or shift the stencil between individual planks, the repeating pattern that gives a stencil away disappears. Seal the result with a thin matte varnish and only then put a wash into the joints. The stencil can also be used on earth and on modeling paste that has not yet dried, where it will create a three-dimensional rather than merely painted texture.
