A casting of the radial engine for the Japanese Type 99 carrier bomber, 1:48 scale. It is the leaner of the brand's two engine sets and does not include the intake.
Responsibility details are not available.
Of the two engine sets the brand lists for this Japanese bomber, this is the leaner one. It contains the powerplant and nothing else. The engine cowling, the intake box and the propeller stay as they came in the original box, and the change to the build is confined to a single place.
The choice between the two sets is governed by how you intend to display the model. With the cowling closed, only the front ring of cylinders is visible and the wider contents would stay buried inside. The narrower set therefore makes sense for anyone building the machine in a flight or an ordinary parked pose with no panels opened. The difference in the time spent working is noticeable too.
A twin-row radial has many shapes an injection mold cannot deliver, above all the narrow gaps between the cylinders of the two rows and the fine finning on the heads. A cast part manages them, because it is made by a different technology and does not have to respect the direction in which a mold opens. It is prepared by cutting it from the casting block, cleaning it up and bonding it with cyanoacrylate. Before it goes into the airframe it is worth spraying the unit and drawing the shadows out with a darker glaze.
The replacement happens at a single point and touches neither the fuselage nor the flying surfaces. Thanks to that it can be brought into a part-built model with no risk that an already finished section would have to be redone. That is the main strength of narrowly defined sets against extensive conversion sets, which often force a build to start again.
Anyone who also wants to replace that long intake hump on top of the cowling needs the wider set. That one is sold separately, and the two sets do not complement each other but replace each other.
The aircraft model, paints and decals are sold separately.
