An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese attack floatplane Aichi M6A1 Seiran in 1:48 scale from Tamiya. The kit is typical for the precise fit of its parts, fine engraved lines and a clean tooling. The model captures the slim floats and a detailed cockpit with an instrument panel and a flexible rear machine gun. The box usually also holds the parts of a transport trolley, a ladder and two pilot figures. For the exact contents and the number of schemes, go by the instructions.
The Aichi M6A1 Seiran was a unique attack floatplane of the Imperial Japanese Navy designed to be launched from the large I-400 class submarines. These carried the aircraft in watertight hangars and a catapult launched them from the surface. The Seiran had folding wings and floats so that it would fit inside the submarine hull, and it was intended for surprise strikes on distant targets - the planned attack on the Panama Canal. Because of the Japanese capitulation it never saw action, and a single example has survived.
Thanks to the precise Tamiya tooling this is a rewarding build. Assemble and paint the cockpit before closing the fuselage, and mask the glazing. Line up the floats and their struts and fix them at the exact angle. Use thin liquid cement on the plastic and apply primer before painting. Spray the dark green upper and light lower finish with an airbrush, and apply the decals over a gloss varnish with a softener. The trolley and the figures will extend the resulting display scene.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
