The Lightning came about as an answer to bombers arriving high and fast. Its two engines were set one above the other, which saved frontal area, and its domain was a steep climb to great heights. The F.6 version was among the last main variants: it received a large ventral tank and a modified wing leading edge for longer range.
The pilot sat in a space that was surprisingly tight for so large a machine, with densely packed panels around him. That is also where a printed set shows an advantage that is not talked about much: it adds no bulk. A photo-etched panel with a backing film and glue grows by several tenths of a millimeter, and in a narrow tub it then stops the seat or the canopy from seating. A printed layer on a decal carrier has the thickness of paper and after seating follows the original shape of the part, so the dimensions stay as the designer of the kit intended.
The set carries the front panel with its instruments, the side consoles, the space under the sidewalls and the surfaces of the seat. The shades of British cockpits with their gray-green tonality are printed, so there is no need to mix them.
Anyone building the machine with the canopy slid back will appreciate one more small thing. The printed lettering and colored segments on the panel stand up to a close look and to a photograph, so the model can be built with the cockpit open without any worry that an empty area will give itself away. It is applied before the front part of the fuselage is closed, while there is free access to the tub. A decal softener is not used here — it would attack the printed resin. The aircraft model is not included.
