An exhaust set for a model of the American Curtiss P-40B fighter in 1:48 scale. It replaces the simplified kit parts in a clearly visible place along the sides of the engine cowling.

The Curtiss P-40B was one of the early production versions of the American P-40 fighter, and in British service it carried the name Tomahawk. It was powered by the liquid-cooled Allison V-1710 V12, whose exhaust stacks came out along both sides of the engine cowling right behind the propeller. The early versions differ from the later ones precisely in the arrangement of the forward fuselage, so the exhausts are among the details by which the versions are told apart.
The set brings replacement exhausts for 1:48 scale. Against the kit parts they have a sharper outline and a more readable shape at the outlets, which tells on the model at once, because the exhausts sit at the viewer's eye level on the most closely watched part of the fuselage. The parts are made for the P-40B version; with another version and with a particular kit, check the shape and the spacing of the mounting beforehand.
The parts are not polystyrene, so bond them with super glue. Cut the surplus material away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand off the rest. Before painting, wash and degrease the exhausts, otherwise the paint may not take. Painting them separately, off the model, and fitting them only after the surrounding finish is done has proved itself, so that nothing around them gets dirtied. Shades of burnt steel and rust look truer when laid on in several thin coats and finished with dry-brushing. The exact way to prepare the parts is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
The set suits modelers of American fighters who want to improve the look of the nose with one small swap. The work calls for a steady hand when cutting the parts away and seating them; otherwise it is a quick upgrade.
