About product

The German Type VIIC submarine U-552 in 1:48 scale from Trumpeter

A large-scale plastic kit in 1:48. The real boat measured over 67 meters, so the finished model is about 1.4 meters long and roughly 14 cm wide - think through in advance where you will stand it and how you will carry it. The kit consists of more than 1100 parts, and the package includes photo-etched parts and an elaborate interior of every compartment - the torpedo rooms, the engine rooms and the control room. The starboard side of the hull is molded in transparent plastic, so the inside remains visible once the model is built. This is a long-term project for experienced modelers, not a weekend build.

The real subject

The Type VIIC was the most numerous type of German U-boat of the Second World War - the backbone of the submarine war in the Atlantic. It was a medium-sized ocean-going boat with diesel propulsion on the surface and electric motors submerged, armed with torpedo tubes in the bow and in the stern. U-552 was one of the best known boats of the whole type. She became famous under the nickname Red Devil after the devil emblem she carried on her conning tower, and she is linked with the name of one of the most successful German submarine commanders. It is precisely that striking emblem that makes U-552 a rewarding subject for modelers as well.

Building and painting tips

Plan ahead: whatever you want to be seen through the transparent side has to be painted and weathered before you close the hull up. Build and paint the interior in sections and mask the transparent parts so that varnish does not fog them. Treat the outer hull with primer, fill the joints between the hull halves properly and sand them wet - on a hull this long every unevenness shows. Apply the paint with an airbrush; the dark gray exterior suits a discreet lightening of the panels followed by a dark wash into the engraved lines. Bend the photo-etched parts on a bending tool and bond them with super glue. Fit the railings and the fine antennas at the very end.

Who the model is for

  • Experienced modelers looking for a large long-term project
  • Collectors and enthusiasts of the submarine war in the Atlantic
  • Modelers interested in interiors - the whole inside stays visible thanks to the transparent side
  • Anyone with over 1.4 meters of free space to display the model

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
