The Grumman F-14A Tomcat is a two-seat carrier fighter with variable-geometry wings. The crew sits in tandem, the pilot in front and the weapons systems officer behind, and each station has equipment of its own. Two turbofan engines provide the power. The cockpits under the long canopy are roomy, and on a model in 1:48 scale a great deal of them is visible.
The set brings three-dimensionally printed color interior decals on decal paper for the instrument panels, the side panels and other surfaces of both cockpits. The elements have a three-dimensional relief and carry finished colors including the markings. This is the reduced version of the set, that is, a narrower selection of elements than the full version offers. It is made for the F-14A kit from Great Wall Hobby in 1:48 scale.
First paint the surfaces under the decals and let them dry thoroughly; the base must be smooth, degreased and coated with gloss varnish, or the element will not hold. Cut the individual parts out with a sharp blade close to the edge of the printing and move them with blunt-jawed tweezers. Work one element at a time and press only lightly, so that the relief is not crushed. For the application itself, follow the manufacturer's instructions.
The reduced version suits modelers who are mainly interested in the instrument panels and do not need full coverage of the cockpits. The work calls for no cutting into the plastic and no sanding, so a less experienced builder will manage it too; tweezers, a sharp blade and good light are what is needed. The sheet is soaked briefly in lukewarm water and the element slides off the backing paper onto the gloss varnish that holds it; do not use a decal softener, as it attacks the printed resin.
The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
