About product

IA-58 Pucara Royal Air Force in 1:48 scale from Kinetic

An injection-molded plastic kit of the FMA IA-58 Pucara in 1:48 scale. This boxing from Kinetic is a release aimed at machines carrying Royal Air Force markings — several captured Pucaras were brought to Great Britain after 1982 and put through flight trials. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The IA-58 Pucara is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft of Argentine manufacture, designed for reconnaissance and ground attack from short and unpaved strips. The crew consists of two men seated in tandem, the cockpit is set high and offers a good view forward and downward, which matches the purpose of the machine for work at low altitude. Power comes from a pair of turboprop engines in nacelles on the wing. The combination of a sturdy structure, a low landing speed and landing gear that tolerated unpaved surfaces made it, at the time it appeared, a machine suited to operation away from the main airfields. Development ran from the end of the 1960s and series production got under way in the 1970s.

Building and painting tips

The high-set glazed cockpit is the dominant feature of the model on this type, so the interior and the canopy framing deserve attention — it pays to obtain masks for the glazing instead of masking with tape. Check the engine nacelles and their joint with the wing dry before gluing; on twin-engine turboprop types this is the place where the most parts come together. For the British trials markings count on a smooth gloss base under the decals; seal the overall finish with a varnish first, settle the decals and only then unify the surface with a matte or semi-gloss varnish according to the look you want. Leave the propellers and their blades until last so that they do not get in the way while the model is handled.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers with experience of building aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • For collections focused on turboprop combat aircraft and on machines for work from field strips
  • For anyone interested in British trials and evaluation machines with an unusual origin
  • For those looking for a subject different from the usual jet types for the display case

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Several captured machines were brought to Great Britain after 1982 and went through flight trials, during which they carried British markings. It is exactly these machines that the boxing is aimed at.

The exact numbers are given on the packaging and in the instructions enclosed with the kit.

Rather for a modeler who has already built an aircraft kit in 1:48. The twin-engine layout and the extensive cockpit glazing call for more careful dry-fitting of the parts.

Yes, masks for the glazing, resin accessories and decals for the Pucara in 1:48 scale do appear on the market. Always check that the particular set is intended for this kit.
