A plastic kit of the single-seat fighter with a variable-geometry wing in the MF version, which the NATO reporting system designates by the name Flogger-B. Trumpeter has worked the MiG-23 family up as a series of boxings by version, so other forms of the same type follow on from this one. The 1:48 scale lets the movable wing and the square side air intakes come into their own.
The MiG-23 was created as a replacement for the MiG-21 and was to combine high speed with the ability to operate from shorter runways. The solution was a wing with a variable sweep angle that the pilot set according to the phase of flight. The MF version was the export form and became the most widely used form of the type in the armament of allied countries; Czechoslovakia operated it as well. It was powered by an R-29 turbojet with afterburner, and its armament consisted of a cannon and air-to-air missiles on fuselage and underwing racks.
The movable wing is the main attraction and the main risk of the build, so dry-fit the mechanism and use glue sparingly around it. The air intakes and their ducts are easier to work and sand before the fuselage is closed up. The gray and green schemes of the Eastern air forces come into their own when you shade the panels slightly and leave the exhaust section to the end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
