A set of figures of pilots in 1:48 scale, shaped into a seated position in the ejection seats of the OV-10D Bronco aircraft. The set is listed for the kit from the brand ICM, so the position of the body and the dimensions reckon with the space of its cockpit.

The real subject

The OV-10 Bronco is an observation and light ground-attack aircraft with a pair of tail booms and with a large glazed cockpit in which a crew of two sits one behind the other. It is precisely that glazing which makes figures the most rewarding accessory on this type: the cockpit can be seen into from the side, from above and from the front, and empty seats behind a clear canopy give away that the model is not flying anywhere. With a crew, by contrast, even a model on a stand looks as though it were waiting for the command to take off.

Building and painting

• The figures are shaped into a seated position, so outside the cockpit their posture makes no sense.
• Before gluing, try them dry in the seats and if necessary sand down the surfaces where the body sits.
• If the parts are not of polystyrene, they are joined with super glue; cement for polystyrene has no effect on them.
• Before painting, wash them in water with detergent and let them dry thoroughly.
• Cut the surplus material and the marks from production away with a sharp blade a little from the part and sand the area down.
• What shows most is the helmet, the shoulders and the hands; the lower part of the legs will disappear under the instrument panel, so give it your time only at the end.
• Glue the figures into the cockpit before you close the canopy, and let them dry thoroughly.
