Lockheed P-38J Lightning is a Tamiya plastic kit in 1:48 scale, the twin-boom American fighter with an unmistakable silhouette. The J version is recognized by the intercoolers moved under the engines, which gave the nacelles their characteristic chin.

An injection-molded plastic kit of the American twin-engine, twin-boom fighter Lockheed P-38J Lightning in 1:48 scale from the manufacturer Tamiya. It is a modern tooling that brings new parts for the J version. The package contains a figure of a seated pilot created with 3D scanning, self-adhesive masks for the canopy glazing, two drop tanks of 150 gallons and two of 300 gallons, clear parts for the position lights and weights for the nose and both engine nacelles, so that the model stands correctly on its nose wheel. The cockpit has a detailed instrument panel, a gunsight and the characteristic controls. The canopy can be built open or closed. The decals cover three marking options, among them the famous machine Marge of the American ace Richard I. Bong.
The P-38 Lightning was one of the most recognizable aircraft of the Second World War: two engine nacelles running back into tail booms, and between them a short central nacelle with the pilot and the armament concentrated in the nose. The J version is the key one and should not be confused with the early P-38F and P-38G. On the P-38J the intercoolers moved from the wing leading edges to below the engines, which created the conspicuous deepened intakes under the propellers known as the chin. The early versions do not have them and their nacelles are slim and smooth from the front. The change was not cosmetic: only with it could the aircraft use the full power of its engines at high altitude. At the same time room was freed in the wing for more fuel, which noticeably extended the range, and it was exactly the long-range missions over the Pacific that made the Lightning a legend. The later P-38L is again a further development step. So if you are choosing a particular version, look at the front of the engine nacelles.
Do not underestimate the weights, because a twin-boom aircraft with nose gear will sit back on its tail without them; the parts are in the package, so just do not forget to glue them in. Finish the cockpit before the nacelle is closed. A natural metal surface is done with an airbrush over a perfectly smoothed and glossy base; small differences of shade between panels give the model depth. The masks supplied speed the framing of the glazing up considerably. A gloss clear coat before the decals, then a final coat according to the scheme chosen: on gloss metal machines stay with gloss, on camouflaged ones rather with semi-flat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
