A kit of the classic Hornet of the RAAF in 1:48 scale from Kinetic, tied by theme to its service in Operation Okra. Australian machines are a rewarding subject among Hornets, because they wore their own national insignia, squadron markings and elements recalling a particular mission.
The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) operated single-seat F/A-18A Hornets from the middle of the 1980s as its main combat aircraft. They are powered by two General Electric F404 turbofan engines, and compared with the later machines of the Super Hornet family they are noticeably smaller and lighter, which is immediately apparent in a side-by-side comparison in a display case. Under the code name Operation Okra, Australia sent an air task group to the Middle East from 2014, whose Hornets operated from an air base in the United Arab Emirates over Iraq and Syria. The RAAF withdrew the classic Hornets at the beginning of the 2020s, and F-35A aircraft took over their role.
The Hornet stands or falls on the cockpit and the forward fuselage, so finish them before you close the fuselage up. Spray the intakes and their inner walls beforehand. The gray naval scheme with low contrast looks best when you shade the individual panels lightly while spraying, rather than later with weathering. A gloss base and a fine softener are necessary under the decals, so that the markings settle into the engraving with no visible edges.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. You will need your own modeling supplies for the application.
