The interceptor 1:48 MiG-21PF Fishbed-D from Academy is an injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet second-generation supersonic fighter.
Responsibility details are not available.
This kit covers the all-weather version of the most widely built supersonic fighter of the Cold War. The 1:48 scale is one of the most rewarding: the model is big enough for the detail of the cockpit and the gear bays to show, and it still fits in an ordinary display case.
The PF version, which Western code names list as Fishbed-D, marked the shift from a day fighter to an interceptor able to operate in poor visibility as well. A more powerful radar fitted into the intake cone, and because of it the diameter of the forward fuselage grew. At the same time the designers left out the built-in gun armament and relied on guided missiles on the underwing pylons. The aircraft reached dozens of air forces around the world and served in many of them for decades.
Finish the cockpit and the nose gear bay and close them before you glue the fuselage halves together. It pays to fill and sand the intake duct behind the cone, because it is visible from the front. On aircraft in a bare finish, leave the metal shades until the end: they are harder to overspray and masking tape easily damages them. Mask the canopy with strips, which gives the curve of the frame a sharp edge.
The set is meant to be assembled and painted by the builder. Paints, glue and accessories are not included, unless stated otherwise.
