A plastic kit of the American experimental aircraft Vought V-173 Flying Pancake with its characteristic circular wing, in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale captures one of the most unusual aircraft in aviation history — the American experimental machine Vought V-173, nicknamed the Flying Pancake. The model is supplied as an unassembled and unpainted kit; the exact contents of the package and the choice of decals are given on the packaging and in the instructions.
The V-173 was a demonstrator of a concept with an extremely low aspect ratio of the lifting surface — an almost circular, disc-shaped wing that formed practically the whole airframe. On the leading edge it carried two large propellers whose flow was meant to limit the tip vortices and improve lift at low speeds. The aim was to test the ability to take off and land in a very short distance and to fly at low speeds at a high angle of attack. The machine first flew in 1942 and served as a flying laboratory for a later, more ambitious fighter project of the same concept. The structure was light, with the covering partly formed by fabric.
Glue the joints between the plastic parts with a thin modeling cement that flows into the seams. Apply a primer before painting. Assemble the large propellers and their shafts carefully and paint them separately from the airframe if you can. Mask the canopy glazing before spraying. An airbrush helps achieve a smooth, even finish on the markedly rounded surfaces of the wing.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
