An accessory from the Polish brand MASTER for ship modelers. The package contains turned metal yardarms in six lengths, specifically 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15 and 17.5 mm, two pieces of each length. The set is universal, not tied to one particular model, and is added to the mast fittings of any ship in the same scale. For longer yardarms the manufacturer has a following set with lengths above this range.
The yardarms supplied with ship kits in 1:700 scale are plastic and have to be excessively thick because of the molding. On a model where a mast is the thickness of a pin, that catches the eye at once. Turned metal can be thin in a proportion matching the real thing while still staying straight and strong, so it will not bend when the rigging is tensioned. That is exactly what matters on ship models: thread or hair rigging loads a yardarm, and a plastic part bends or tears away under the pull.
Choose the length according to a drawing or to the original plastic part, and if necessary shorten the excess with straight-cut nippers, then level the cut with a file. Glue the yardarms with super glue, preferably gel, which does not run. Fit them only after the mast is painted, and best of all before the mast is set on the deck, while you can still turn it freely. Degrease the metal with spirit before painting and use a primer for metal. Metal yardarms combine splendidly with photo-etched railings and ladders, because both are glued with the same glue. Tension the rigging at the very end.
This is an accessory for building ship models, not a ship kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
