The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk came about as a protest against the trend of the time toward ever larger and heavier combat aircraft. Its designers kept it so small that its delta wing did not need to fold for the deck of an aircraft carrier, and yet it carried a decent load of armament. It was precisely the combination of low weight, simplicity and toughness that gave it an exceptionally long service with the Navy and with other users around the world. The late versions differ from the early ones in a number of details, among them the landing gear and the tires used.
The set replaces the landing gear wheels with resin parts in the form matching the late versions of the aircraft. Compared with the parts in injected plastic it offers a crisper tread, a more legible rim and a more accurate shape. The extent of the parts and the way they are fitted is described in the manufacturer's instructions.
The parts are not polystyrene, so cement for plastic has no effect on them; make the joint with super glue. Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder down, so that the outline of the tire is not disturbed. Wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap and degrease them before painting. A tire looks better in a dark gray shade than in pure black; separate the rim with a mask or a carefully guided brush. Fit the wheels only once the spraying of the model is finished, and dust them lightly at the end so that they do not look new.
The set will please the modeler who is bothered by simplified wheel shapes in a small scale and wants to lift the landing gear without touching the rest of the build.
The package contains the set of wheels only. The aircraft model, the paints, the glue and the decals are not included, unless stated otherwise.
