A collection of decals in 1:72 scale for models of the carrier-borne attack aircraft A-7E Corsair II in the markings of the VA-82 The Marauders squadron, as made famous by the film The Final Countdown of 1980. These are the markings alone for a finished model, not a kit. The word collection in the name suggests a wider range of subjects, but their exact number cannot be read from the name.
The A-7E Corsair II was a single-seat subsonic attack aircraft of the US Navy, derived in shape from the Crusader fighter but shorter, sturdier and built to carry bombs and rockets accurately. It was powered by a turbofan engine with great thrust and low consumption, which gave the aircraft a remarkable range from the deck of a carrier. The E version brought a more modern navigation and attack system, thanks to which it was among the most accurate attack machines of its day. The VA-82 squadron flew Corsair IIs from a carrier deck, and its strikingly marked aircraft even came before the film camera, which has made this scheme a sought-after subject among modelers.
The colorful, contrasting squadron markings come out best on a smooth gloss surface. Trim the subjects close to the artwork, soak them off in warm water and slide them into place. On the curves of leading edges and covers, use a softener in stages rather than all at once. Once dry, varnish the whole model so that the resulting sheen matches carrier service.
