About product

Mitsubishi A5M2 Claude 1:72, a Hobby Boss plastic kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese carrier fighter Mitsubishi A5M2, given the Allied code name Claude, in 1:72 scale from Hobby Boss. The model belongs to the range of simplified easy assembly kits with a low number of parts: it is quick to build and suits beginners and younger modelers, yet it has engraved detail and a clear part. The instructions supplied state the exact contents of the box and the marking schemes.

The real subject

The Mitsubishi A5M, listed with the Imperial Japanese Navy as the Type 96 carrier fighter, was the first production monoplane carrier fighter in the world and the direct predecessor of the legendary A6M Zero. It had an open cockpit, fixed landing gear and exceptional agility. It was committed above all in the Second Sino-Japanese War in the second half of the 1930s, where it won superiority in the air. By the time war broke out in the Pacific it was already obsolete and was moving to training and second-line duties.

Building and painting tips

Clean up the parts and paint the cockpit before closing up the fuselage. Lay a primer on the plastic. Early Japanese naval machines tended to be in a light gray to silvery color with prominent national insignia, which is a rewarding and quick scheme. It is a good idea to glue on the fixed landing gear with its wheel spats only after the base painting. Bring out the engraved detail with a fine wash and apply the decals onto a gloss coat. The open cockpit offers a view of the pilot's position, so it pays to give the seat and the instrument panel a little care.

Who the model is for

  • For lovers of prewar and early war Japanese naval aviation.
  • For beginners and younger modelers, thanks to the low number of parts.
  • For collectors who want the predecessor of the Zero in a display case of Japanese fighters.
  • As a quick and undemanding building project in 1:72 scale.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
