Three-dimensional printed decals for the cockpit of the four-engine Superfortress in 1:72 scale, supplemented with etched pilot seat belts. The paint and relief are finished from the factory.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Superfortress brought things to bomber aviation that had not existed before: pressurized compartments linked by a tunnel over the bomb bays, remotely aimed turrets with computed lead, and engines powerful enough to demand constant temperature monitoring. An eleven-man crew operated the aircraft from several stations, and the forward section was literally a glazed cage full of instruments.
This set addresses exactly the most laborious part of the model. The three-dimensional decals carry finished instrument panels, side consoles and small control boxes complete with relief and printed color, and etched belts for the pilots' seats are included as well. In 1:72 scale, hand-painting hundreds of dials would be beyond most builders; here you just need to transfer the film into place.
The process differs from ordinary decals: only the backing paper is moistened, the element is lifted off with tweezers and fixed with white PVA glue — a decal softener must not be used here. It pays to blot the film with a paper tissue so no water is left underneath it, and to seal it with a matte varnish once dry.
The contents cover the equipment of the cockpit, not airframe parts; it is meant to be added inside a kit already under construction.
The space behind the pilots' station stays closed on most builds, yet it can still be glimpsed deeper than a builder might expect through the side windows and upper viewports. That is exactly why it is worth fitting out even the consoles that are not obvious at first glance.
