The concrete surface of the Da Nang air base in 1970. A base of 180x357 mm in acrylic for models in 1:72 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The base beside the coastal city in central Vietnam was one of the busiest airfields in the world at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. Fighter and reconnaissance machines took off from it, revetments stood between the paved areas, and the surface bore traffic it was never built for. The base captures a piece of such a surface, with its joints, patches and markings.
The concrete of airfield surfaces is not a uniform gray. Every panel has a different shade, the joints are darker, and stains from fuel and rubber gather at the edges. To paint that convincingly means working with filters, glazes and pigments, techniques in which it is easy to overstep. A printed surface offers this variety ready made and even along its whole length.
This is for the modeler who wants the machine displayed in a setting but does not want to get into building a diorama. The format of 180x357 millimeters covers roughly 300 square meters of concrete in 1:72, that is a stand for one combat aircraft and for the small ground crew around it. Anyone who plans a sunken revetment, uneven terrain or vegetation needs a solid base and plaster instead, because depth cannot be had in a flat board.
The thickness of 3 millimeters keeps the board flat even over a larger span, and the surface wipes clean with a cloth alone. It is best to stand the model on the surface and not glue it down; as soon as the scene no longer suits, it can be used under another machine with not a trace of the previous owner.
