About product

Masking Set, 1:72 DH.100 Vampire Mk.3/5/9 and Export Variants (Special Mask)

This item is not a kit or a finished model but an accessory for a model in 1:72 scale. It contains pre-cut self-adhesive masks that cover, before spraying, the areas meant to stay clean — above all the cockpit glazing. The result is an evenly wide frame whose color is part of the model's surface rather than a decal sitting on top of it. The Special Mask brand belongs to the family of Czech modeling companies grouped around the manufacturer Special Hobby.

Why a Mask Instead of Manual Taping

The Vampire has a cockpit with fine but distinct framing that is difficult to tape by hand in 1:72 scale. A hand-cut strip almost never matches the same width on both sides, follows the canopy's curve poorly, and paint likes to seep underneath it. A pre-cut mask, by contrast, fits the part's shape, holds by its own adhesive, and leaves a sharp edge once removed. The set also saves the part of the build that most modelers find the least enjoyable.

Tips for Application and Spraying

First degrease the glazing and let it dry thoroughly. Lift the mask off the sheet with a pointed tweezer or the tip of a hobby knife, place it dry, press it down along the whole edge with a toothpick, and only then spray. Apply thin coats, preferring more passes over one heavy dose, so paint does not build up on the mask's edge. Remove the mask while the paint is only tacky, not after it has fully cured, and pull it at an angle across the edge, not straight up. Store the unused part of the sheet in a closed bag away from light and heat, and the adhesive will last considerably longer.

Who the Set Is For

  • Modelers building first-generation jet fighters in 1:72 scale.
  • Builders bothered by unevenly wide or bled-through cockpit frames.
  • Anyone who wants to shorten the paint-prep stage and focus on the build.
  • Beginners looking to learn masking on a simple canopy shape.

This is an accessory, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a masking set, an accessory used when painting the model. The kit itself needs to be purchased separately.

A decal sits on the surface and its edge is visible from the side. A mask, by contrast, creates the frame directly from paint, so the surface stays smooth and the transition is sharp.

Best shortly after spraying, while the paint is only tacky. After it fully cures, the paint film on the edge can crack or flake.

Yes. The work involves precisely placing and pressing down each piece. It just takes tweezers, good light and patience when working the edges.
