An injection-molded plastic kit of the American two-seat jet fighter F-4D Phantom II in 1:72 scale from the Japanese manufacturer FineMolds. The Phantom family from this manufacturer is among the best that can be had in its scale: it stands out for well-thought-out engineering, fine engraving and an excellent fit of the parts. The fuselage is designed to minimize seams, the cockpit side consoles are separate inserts, the intake ducts run right through and the canopy can be built open or closed. The box holds decals for color schemes.
The Phantom II was one of the most significant Western combat aircraft of the Cold War: a heavy twin-engine fighter with exceptional performance, payload and versatility. The F-4D version was the US Air Force variant with revised avionics, optimized for air combat as well as ground attack. Phantoms became famous in Vietnam and served with a number of allied air forces for decades.
Use thin cement for plastic and test the parts dry, as the accuracy of the tooling is worth making the most of with careful preparation. Mask the canopy glazing and paint it separately. Spray a primer before painting, put gloss varnish under the decals and unify the whole with a matte coat. The rich stenciling of Phantoms rewards patient work.
