An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet fighter Polikarpov I-16 in the Type 5 version, in 1:72 scale from the modern brand Clear Prop Models. The kit comes from a new tool with fine surface detail and well-executed parts. Depending on the particular edition, photo-etched parts and painting masks are also included (in the higher expert editions); the simpler editions concentrate on the plastic parts and the decals. The real subject

The Polikarpov I-16 was a pioneering Soviet fighter of the 1930s - one of the first production monoplanes with retractable landing gear. Its characteristic stubby fuselage with a radial engine gave it an unmistakable look. The Type 5 version of the middle of the 1930s was among the widespread forms and was powered by a radial engine derived from the license-built American Wright Cyclone. The I-16 proved itself in combat in the Spanish Civil War, at the Khalkhin Gol river and in the opening fighting on the Eastern Front.

Building and painting tips

Separate the fine parts carefully with a sharp knife and clean the surfaces up. Glue with liquid cement for plastic run into the joints. Apply a primer before painting; the radial engine and the stubby fuselage come out well with an airbrush and shading of the covering color. If the boxing contains masks, they will make painting the canopy glazing easier. A wash into the panel lines will pick out the fine surface detail of the tool.
