Injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese Kawasaki Ki-61-I Hei Hien fighter in 1:72 scale from RS Models. It is a short-run kit meant to be glued and sprayed; the model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. For the exact contents of the box, the number of finishing schemes and any resin or photo-etched extras, follow the enclosed instructions.
The Ki-61 Hien (given the nickname Tony by the Allies) was the only Japanese production fighter powered by a liquid-cooled inverted V12 engine, which gave it a slim nose reminiscent of the German types. The Ki-61-I Hei version differed from the earlier variants mainly in its armament: instead of wing machine guns it received a pair of 20 mm cannons derived from the Mauser MG 151/20, which gave it far heavier fire against bombers. It was used from 1943 in the defense of the home islands and over the Pacific.
Short-run kits take more work than ordinary mainstream kits - expect to clean up the molding edges, adjust the mating surfaces and seat the cockpit glazing carefully. Finish the cockpit interior first and only then glue the fuselage together. Spray over a primer and apply the paint with an airbrush in thin coats; both a natural metal finish and the Japanese camouflage schemes come to life with a light wash in the panel lines.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
