About product

The two-seat N/AW A-10A in 1:72 scale from Hobby Boss

This injection-molded plastic kit captures the unusual two-seat conversion of the A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft, marked with the abbreviation N/AW for use at night and in difficult weather. It brings a variant to a collection that you will not meet on the ordinary A-10s. The scale is 1:72 and the maker is Hobby Boss.

The real subject

The A-10 is a single-seat attack aircraft built around a seven-barrel large-caliber cannon, with a pair of jet engines mounted high on the sides of the rear fuselage and an armored tub around the pilot. The abbreviation N/AW stands for night and adverse weather: it was a test conversion with a second cockpit for a weapon systems operator, together with enlarged vertical tail surfaces because of the changed stability. The machine was to widen the scope of operations beyond daylight conditions, but it never reached series production and remained at the testing stage at the turn of the nineteen seventies and eighties. That is exactly what makes it a rewarding subject for a collection of prototypes and dead-end development branches.

Building and painting tips

The two-seat cockpit is the main peculiarity of the model, so finish and paint it before you close the fuselage up. Fit the engine nacelles precisely, so that the model does not sit twisted. Gray attack camouflage stands out over a uniform primer; spray with an airbrush and keep the transitions soft. Weathering pays off in moderation on this type: bring out the panel lines and suggest the gun gas staining behind the barrel under the nose. Fit the landing gear and any external stores only after the fuselage has been painted.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of prototypes and unusual versions of well-known aircraft
  • Modelers interested in American attack aviation
  • Anyone who wants to compare it with the ordinary single-seat A-10
  • Builders with basic experience of plastic kits

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

A very simple kit with good details. I have no complaints, although the kit actually represents the two-seat experimental prototype YA-10B, which may be what makes it unique.

FAQ

It denotes the conversion for use at night and in difficult weather. The aircraft received a second cockpit for a weapon systems operator and enlarged vertical tail surfaces.

No, it remained a test machine and the two-seat conversion never reached series production. That is exactly what makes it interesting for a collection.

The sequence is similar; the main difference is the longer glazed section of the cockpit and the differently shaped tail surfaces. It is worth finishing the cockpit before the fuselage is closed up.
