About product

Praga E-114 Air Baby in 1:72 scale from Kovozavody Prostejov

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Praga E-114 Air Baby in 1:72 scale from the traditional Czech brand Kovozavody Prostejov (KP). KP have long specialized in aircraft in 1:72 scale and in subjects from Czechoslovak aviation history that the large world manufacturers usually do not cover. The package contains the plastic sprues, decals and assembly instructions; the actual contents and the color schemes offered are given on the box. The model is small and fine and rewards careful work: it is a typical small-aircraft kit, where what counts is cleanliness of execution, not the number of parts.

The real subject

The Praga E-114 was a light two-seat sporting and touring aircraft, built at the CKD-Praga works, which first flew in the mid-1930s. It was a high-wing monoplane of all-wood construction with side-by-side seating and fixed landing gear. Thanks to its very low weight it earned the nickname Air Baby. It was powered by a small two-cylinder Praga engine, and on later machines by a stronger unit. The aircraft was among the most successful Czechoslovak sporting machines of its day: it was built in several hundred examples and was also built under license in Great Britain, where it is known as the Hillson Praga. Undemanding operation and pleasant flying qualities made it a favorite machine of flying clubs.

Building and painting tips

A small aircraft in a small scale means small, fragile parts, so work with a sharp knife, cut the parts from the sprue rather than snapping them off, and clean the gate marks up with a file or a sanding sponge. Glue with extra thin liquid cement for plastic, which draws into the joint by capillary action. The most sensitive items are the thin elements: the landing gear legs, the exhausts and the propeller; seat them dry at the correct angle and let the joint cure properly before you handle the model further. The interior of the glazed two-seat cabin is clearly visible, so give it a moment extra. Mask the glazing and glue it so that the plastic does not fog. Apply a primer before painting and spray with an airbrush in thin coats. Before the decals, coat the area with a gloss varnish, use a decal softener once it has dried and seal the surface with a matte coat: on a gloss surface the decals settle without silvering.

Rather for a modeler who already has a build or two behind them. The parts are small and fine and reward patience and clean work with a knife and glue.
