The real subject

The Spitfire F.Mk.22 is one of the last versions of the British fighter. Compared with the wartime machines it received the more powerful Griffon engine, a V12, a cut-down fuselage spine and a teardrop canopy under which the pilot can see to the rear as well. It is because of that canopy that far more of the cockpit is visible than on the older versions, and in 1:72 scale it shows on the finished model.

What the set contains

The set brings colored three-dimensional elements of the cockpit interior. They complete the instrument panel, the side consoles and other surfaces of the cockpit; the elements have raised relief and carry finished colors and lettering, so there is no need to paint the small instruments with a brush, which is difficult in a small scale. The extent, the number and the placement of the individual elements are given in the manufacturer's instructions. The shaping matches the Airfix Spitfire F.Mk.22 kit in 1:72 scale.

How to work with the elements

Before applying them, check in the instructions whether the elements are self-adhesive; the method of application differs between product lines and is given in the manufacturer's instructions. Paint the surfaces underneath the elements beforehand, let them dry completely and degrease the surface. In 1:72 scale the parts are genuinely tiny, so have sharp tweezers, good light and preferably a magnifier ready.

• Work over a light surface, as a dropped element is then easier to find
• Seat the element from one edge so that no air is trapped underneath
• Fit out the cockpit before gluing the fuselage together and fitting the canopy
• Press it down with a cotton swab, using gentle pressure

The set is for a builder who wants legible instruments in an open cockpit without laborious painting. The kit, the paints and the glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
