A pure white shade is among the paints that cost a modeler the most work. Of all shades, white pigment has the lowest ability to cover what lies beneath, so the finished surface gives away every unevenness and every dark part showing through. It pays to build it up in thin coats and to let the surface flash off properly between passes.
This is a water-thinnable acrylic paint that can be applied with an airbrush. It is thinned with water or with a product of the same line, and the tools are cleaned afterwards with the matching cleaner. The bottle has to be stirred thoroughly before you draw paint into the cup, because the pigment settles to the bottom.
Next to the name of the shade, the label on the bottle also states how the paint dries and which kind of subject the manufacturer recommends it for. Anyone building a palette gradually will put it together faster and with fewer dead-end purchases by following these notes.
White also serves to let a modeler find out what the surface is really like. Sprayed in a thin coat it works as a check coat: it shows the scratches left by sanding and the places where the filler did not sit, and it does so before the coats start to build up. Fixing a mistake at that point costs a few minutes; after the color scheme is finished it is a whole evening of work.
