A rusty brown tone with a red undertone. For leather, corrosion and the brown patches of camouflage.
Responsibility details are not available.
This shade is closer to rust than to chocolate. The red undertone in it stays readable even after drying, and that is exactly why corrosion builds up well from it: sprayed in irregular islands and then worked over with pigment, it gives iron a believable age. It also suits leather straps, bags and saddles, where a solid brown looks dead.
From mid-war German vehicles carried three-color patterns, and the brownish red bands in them played a part as important as the green ones. For work like that the shade is thinned to the edge of transparency and applied with soft edges, so that the transition does not look like a band stuck on.
The binder is acrylic and takes thinning with water, which makes cleaning up easier: you rinse out the hose, the cup and the needle before the paint sets. The deep pigment tends to settle, so stir the bottle during longer sessions as well, not only at the start.
The numerical code of the shade is printed in a frame at the top, and the name of the color in the middle. To the left of the name you learn whether the finish is matte, gloss, semi-gloss or metallic; to the right is the field of use. Military tones tend to give the country and the period in which they were used as well.
Mixed with orange it moves toward fresh young rust, and with black toward an old set layer. Anyone building corrosion in stages will appreciate that a whole scale, from a fresh patch to rotted sheet metal, can be derived from a single bottle. The differences between the individual steps can be kept genuinely small.
