About product

British Army AFV Desert Colors 1940-1943, a set of 6x 17 ml

A set of modeling paints, not a kit. It belongs to Real Colors, which at AK Interactive is a lacquer range: it is not thinned with water but with the thinner the manufacturer recommends. The package contains six 17 ml bottles and is put together for the desert finishes of British armored vehicles in North Africa and the Mediterranean in the years 1940 to 1943. Six shades make sense for this subject, because the desert schemes changed over the period and there was no single universal sand tone across all vehicles.

Use

  • Basic desert areas of armored vehicles, sprayed with an airbrush.
  • Two-tone and blended schemes, where the shades run into one another at the edges.
  • Lightening the upper surfaces and the centers of panels before weathering.
  • A base for dust effects and pigments: a hard lacquer film will take the coats that follow.
  • Bringing several vehicles of one scene into a common color key.

What to watch out for

Do not mix the range with acrylics or enamels and do not thin it with water, because mixed binders curdle. Shake the bottle thoroughly before spraying and lay the paint down in several thin coats; desert shades cover less well than dark greens, so a single heavy coat saves less work than it later costs to repair flooded detail. Work in a ventilated workshop with respiratory protection, as the paints are flammable. Which particular shades the set contains and how they relate to period standards is given on the bottle labels and in the manufacturer's own documentation, and those are what to go by.

Who it is for

For armor modelers who build British vehicles for the North African and Mediterranean theaters and want the shades they need in a single package, and for diorama builders who want several vehicles to read as one whole. The text is technical and concerns work with paint on the model.

Flammable liquid. Spray only in a well-ventilated area, use respiratory protection and keep away from children and sources of ignition.

FAQ

With the thinner the manufacturer recommends for this lacquer range. Neither water nor acrylic thinner belongs in them, as the paint would curdle.

According to the product name, six bottles of 17 ml. Which particular shades they are can be seen on the labels and on the packaging of the set.

British desert schemes changed over the years 1940 to 1943 and were not a single universal tone. The set is therefore built as a palette, not as one paint.

Technically yes, paint is paint. But the set is put together for British desert schemes of that period, so on other equipment check the shade against your own reference.
