Vallejo – Detail brush, round synthetic, size 5/0

A fine round brush in synthetic fiber from the detail range of Vallejo. It is not a paint and not a kit – it is a tool. The manufacturer supplies the detail range in sizes from 10/0 up to 4, so it can be extended toward the coarser and the finer end alike.

What the designation 5/0 means

The numbering of round brushes runs downward: 2, 1, 0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, 5/0 … and on to 10/0. The higher the number before the slash, the finer the brush. Five-over-zero is therefore noticeably finer than size 1, but nowhere near as extreme as 10/0. It is an honest middle road of detail painting.

Use

  • small detail: instrument panels, gauges, levers, fittings, buckles, locks
  • lining edges and picking out engraved lines
  • small areas on figures – belts, webbing, buttons, equipment
  • corrections and touch-ups after masking, where accuracy matters and speed does not

How to choose between the sizes

If you need one all-round brush and not a narrow specialization, reach rather for the bigger size 1 – it holds more paint and you do not have to reload so often. If on the other hand you are aiming at the eyes and faces of figures, microdetail and the thinnest lines, 10/0 is what awaits you. Remember: the finer the brush, the less paint it holds and the more often you have to reload – and meanwhile the paint is drying on your palette. Most modelers therefore reach for a combination of two or three sizes rather than for a single one.

Care of the brush

  • Pick the paint up on the tip only – the brush must not be dipped as far as the ferrule. Paint dried at the root of the fibers destroys a brush.
  • Wash it out immediately after work, not the next day: acrylic with water, lacquer and enamel with the appropriate thinner.
  • Never leave it standing in a jar resting on its tip – the fibers bend permanently. Store it fibers up.
  • Synthetic fiber handles aggressive thinners better than natural hair, which shows with lacquers and enamels.

The brush is a tool. Paints, thinners and cleaner are not included in the package.

Yes, markedly. The sizes descend in the order 2, 1, 0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, 5/0 … up to 10/0 – the higher the number before the slash, the finer the brush. Of these three sizes, 1 is the largest, 5/0 is fine and 10/0 is extremely fine.

No, unless you paint the eyes of figures and microdetail. An extremely fine brush holds very little paint, so you have to reload after almost every stroke and the paint dries in the meantime. For ordinary detail 5/0 is more comfortable, and for all-round work size 1 is the best.

To small detail – instrument panels, gauges, fittings and buckles, picking out edges and engraved lines, small areas on figures. That is, where size 1 is already too coarse.

Do not dip it as far as the ferrule, wash it out immediately after use (acrylic with water, lacquer and enamel with thinner), dry and store it fibers up and never leave it standing tip down in a jar.
