Two pieces of thick-grain cork 5 mm thick for building terrain, rocks and walls on dioramas and bases.

Cork is one of the oldest and least demanding ways to make a rock face, a retaining wall, a break in the terrain or broken paving on a diorama. Its advantage lies in the way it breaks: an edge left by a break looks more convincing than anything you could laboriously carve with a knife. This item offers the thick-grain version, 5 mm thick, in two pieces. The coarser grain suits rock faces and larger areas where the texture is meant to show even from a distance.
Cork can be cut with a sharp knife, but for rocks it is better to break it: score the sheet only part way through and snap the rest by hand. Layering several pieces on top of each other gives you height and stepped ledges, and the less regularly you offset the layers, the better. It is glued with PVA wood glue, and with small parts super glue will serve too. Fill the gaps and the transitions to the baseboard with modeling putty or a mix of sand and thinned glue.
Cork is absorbent and paint takes to it unevenly, so first soak it with thinned paint or a sealer and only then build up the shades. A dark wash into the recesses and a dry brush on the edges suit a rock; scatter materials and static grass take hold better on a sealed surface than on bare cork.
Paints, glue and tools are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
