The number in brackets distinguishes this tone from its sibling designated with a one. Both grays exist alongside each other precisely because they differ in temperature and depth, and a modeler chooses according to what is being built. A dark gray of this kind tends to be the choice for the hulls and decks of warships, for artillery and for landing gear bays, where a shadow should look deeper than black would allow.
Besides being a coat in its own right, the grays from this part of the chart are often used as a shading tone. Sprayed into panel grooves and seams before the covering coat, they create a shadow under a lighter shade that looks natural after a light overspray and does not shout. They serve equally well on small equipment, crates, tarpaulins and everything that is meant to look worn on a model.
The package holds 10 ml. It is applied mainly with an airbrush; when spraying onto a smooth surface, reach for Mr. Color Thinner, because water beads up on non-absorbent plastic and roughens the result. The paint has to be stirred right down to the bottom, otherwise it dries slowly and stays tacky. Anyone who prefers brushing adds about a quarter of the volume of Mr. Retarder Mild so that the brush marks have time to level out by themselves. Let the coat dry somewhere warm and free of dust; matte grays are more sensitive to settled dirt than gloss tones, because a speck in them cannot be polished away.
Close the jar carefully after work and wipe the rim of the thread. Dried residue on the neck unseals the lid and the paint then thickens in a closed package faster than it needs to.
