Vallejo Model Air IAF Sand 17 ml

A sand shade from the Model Air acrylic range in a bottle holding 17 ml. The dropper cap is more practical in this range than it might seem: you measure the paint out drop by drop, so you can easily repeat the same ratio when mixing your own tone even a week later. The binder is an acrylic dispersion, so it is thinned with water or with the acrylic thinner of the same manufacturer. The manufacturer does not spell out the abbreviation IAF in the name, so the shade should not be tied to any particular air force; work with it as a sand shade for desert and semi-desert schemes.

Use

• Shake the bottle until you feel that the settled pigment has come loose from the bottom.
• Light sand tones cover a dark base badly, so apply them over a light primer or over a white undercoat.
• Measure a few drops into a dish and add a drop of white to lighten the centers of panels; mix a darker version with a drop of brown.
• Cover with three thin passes rather than one heavy one, as sand shades otherwise lose the surface texture easily.
• Once dry, seal the surface with a varnish before starting on washes or pigments.

Who the paint is for

It will be appreciated by modelers of desert vehicles and of aircraft in sand camouflage who work with an airbrush and want a paint with a consistency ready for spraying. It serves just as well as a base for color modulation, where several graduated tones are mixed from a single bottle and used to bring a panel to life. With a brush it is usable on small areas and details; on large areas it needs more coats.
