Moss Green – a moss green in a dense acrylic

Moss Green is a bottled acrylic of the dense Artistic Dense line. It is thinned with water or an acrylic thinner. A shade of the same name exists in the range as a pigment, a wash and an oil paint as well — those are different kinds of product with different uses and safety rules. This item is a covering acrylic paint in a bottle. The tone is a moss green: a subdued natural green shifted toward yellow, neither a signal nor a uniform color.

Where the shade belongs

A natural green has two domains. On a figure and its base it is the color of vegetation, of moss on stones, of green deposits on wood and of damp places on masonry; drawn over gray stone in a glaze it turns clean rock into a piece that has stood somewhere. On clothing it serves as a subdued green cloth and as an addition that takes the garishness out of sharper greens. Combining it with pigments works well, but only on a completely dry layer — wet acrylic soaks the pigment up and sticks it into blotches.

How to work with it

• Glazes: thin the paint markedly and let it run into the panel lines and recesses where moss would really grow. A deposit over the whole area looks like paintwork.
• Apply it irregularly, as moss does not grow evenly; stippling the paint on with a dry sponge or a split brush helps.
• Mix it with ocher for drier shades and with a dark blue for a cool shadow.
• On bases, combine it with loose materials and pigments only once it is completely dry.
