A Rust-Red Surfacer in a Spray Can

Oxide Red Surfacer 1000 comes as a ready-to-use 170 ml aerosol, so no gun or compressor is needed to use it. The number 1000 describes the fineness of the filler: the coat fills hairline scratches left by sandpaper and small seam imperfections, but it will not clog rivets or an engraved panel line. The shade aims at the reddish-brown base color that steel structures used to get before a topcoat went on.

The binder comes from the manufacturer's lacquer line. The coat therefore dries briskly and, once cured, holds firmly even on smooth styrene, from which ordinary water-based paints like to peel. Shake the can thoroughly, pause between passes, and sweep it in short strokes that start and end off the part. Three thin coats do a better job than one heavy one.

A colored base pays off wherever chipped or rusted-through paint is planned. Under the sand camouflage of an armored vehicle, under the flaking paint of a ship's hull, or under the fill panels of freight cars, red gives a deeper foundation than neutral gray. The rich tone also works as a check coat, since on an even surface any spots that still need more filler immediately stand out.

Level the dried coat with 800-to-1000-grit wet sandpaper, fill in any low spots you find, and repeat as needed. Photo-etched sheets and resin castings appreciate it too, since ordinary paint likes to peel off their smooth surface. A clean, degreased part is a prerequisite. Spray in a well-ventilated room or an extraction booth, and after use turn the can upside down and give it a short spray so the nozzle stays clear.
