Oxide Yellow - an earthy ocher yellow

Oxide Yellow is a bottled acrylic paint from the dense Artistic Dense range intended mainly for figures. It is thinned with water or with acrylic thinner; apart from the shade it has nothing in common with the oil paint, the spray or the weathering effect of the same name. The name refers to an ocher yellow from the family of earth pigments — it is a matte-looking tone shifted toward brown, not a signal yellow.

Where the shade belongs

On figures the earth yellows are a universal working color. They suit khaki uniforms, canvas, canvas straps, dusty boots, wood, soft leather and a base under desert schemes. It behaves especially well as a transitional color between brown and light yellow: in a mix it holds a tone together and makes no unnatural jumps, which is what one runs into with pure yellows. Over a dark surface it looks subdued, over a light one it opens up and lights up — both are usable, only think your choice of base through in advance.

How to work with it

• Mixing is the main discipline of this shade: with brown you get a shadow, with white or a rich yellow a highlight, and with a little green it shifts toward khaki.
• For fabric and canvas work in thinner layers rather, as a dense paint would wipe out the small folds.
• Take little paint on the brush and repeat the stroke rather than not — a dense acrylic is hard to correct once you have laid on too much.
• Combining it with pigments and dust effects works well, but only after the acrylic has dried completely.
