Paynes Grey — an acrylic paint by AK interactive, the Artistic Dense range

Paynes Grey is a classic taken over from the artist's palette: a very dark gray tone shifted toward blue, which painters have used from of old where pure black would kill the color. On a model it shows at once — a shadow of Paynes Grey stays cool and alive, whereas a black shadow looks like a hole. It is an acrylic paint thinnable with water, not a lacquer and not an enamel, so you need no solvents for the work.

Use

• Shading dark fabrics, cloaks, leather equipment and blue areas, where a shadow is to stay colored.
• Glazing in layers: thin the paint heavily and apply it in several thin layers into the folds. Let each one dry before you add the next — the more layers, the deeper the shadow, without clogging the detail.
• Darkening other shades on the palette. A small amount shifts a tone toward cool without graying it as black does.
• With white it gives a whole scale of cool blue-grays — for weathered wood, concrete, steel or naval subjects.
• Over a dark surface apply it thicker; thinned paint on a dark base will barely speak.

Who it is for

The range is built above all for figures and miniatures, that is for a small format, work with a brush and building the color up in layers. Paynes Grey is one of its cornerstones — a palette cannot do without a sensible dark tone. For the range the manufacturer also supplies a medium and a drying retarder of its own, which come in useful when you need more time for joining transitions. The volume of the package, the covering power and an equivalent according to RAL or FS are not stated here.
