The Shandong is an aircraft carrier of the navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army and the first carrier built in China itself. Aircraft take off from it over a sloped ramp on the bow rather than by catapult, and the large island on the starboard side carries radars and command posts. It is precisely the ramp and the tall island that give the ship a silhouette recognizable even to someone who does not otherwise follow ships.
The kit belongs to the group of shortened stylized models, that is the egg-style or cute forms. The hull is deliberately shortened and squashed, while the island and the aircraft are enlarged against it, so the model is not a reduction in a fixed scale but a caricature of the real subject. The number of parts, the way they join and any accessories are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
The parts are plastic and hold with ordinary cement for plastic models. Whether the kit is designed to snap together without glue is in the instructions. Before gluing, cut the flash from manufacture off and sand it down, as on a stylized model with large smooth areas every irregularity shows well. The deck takes more work than it seems: a dark wash sets a shadow into the seams, fine rubs suggest service and the horizontal markings on the deck bring the model to life. If the kit contains decals, apply them onto a smooth gloss base.
