About product

Northrop F-5N+ Tiger II - VFC-111 Sundowners, 1:48, AFV Club

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Northrop F-5N+ in 1:48 scale from the Taiwanese maker AFV Club. The boxing is built around the unit VFC-111 Sundowners, an American naval aggressor squadron whose machines wear striking, varied and unusual finishes. That is the main reason to reach for this box: the decals and the paint scheme are the product here, not just an addition. Aggressor aircraft are deliberately painted so as to resemble foreign opponents in a training engagement, and the result is far more interesting for a modeler than a standard gray fighter. The F-5N+ is not just a repainted old Tiger either: the letter + marks an upgraded machine with new avionics and an extended service life.

The real subject

The Northrop F-5 came about as a small, cheap and simple supersonic fighter for the allies of the USA. In American service, though, it found another role that is still central: the aggressor. The US Navy and the Marine Corps use it as the enemy in air combat training: it is small, agile, hard to see and cheap to operate, so it simulates a typical opponent well. VFC-111 Sundowners is a reserve aggressor squadron of the US Navy based in Florida, flying single-seat F-5Ns and one two-seat F-5F. A number of its machines come from former Swiss stocks. The upgrade to the + standard brought new digital avionics and kept the Tigers in active service longer, precisely so that pilot training would still have a believable opponent.

Building and painting tips

The heart of the work here is in the paint. Aggressor camouflage schemes have sharp, irregular transitions: either spray them through masks or use masking putty for a sharp but not cut-out edge. Work from the lightest shade to the darkest. Use thin cement for plastic, and it pays to pick out the cockpit and the landing gear bays with a wash. Apply a gloss clear coat before the decals: with varied schemes there are many decals and a dried silvered edge would show.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers drawn to varied aggressor camouflage instead of the usual gray
  • For fans of air combat training and of US Navy machines
  • For moderately advanced and experienced builders: the build is manageable, the paint is the challenge
  • For collectors of light fighters in 1:48 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

An aggressor squadron plays the enemy in training. Its machines are therefore painted so as to resemble the aircraft of foreign air arms, and that is where the varied, contrasting schemes come from, which you will never see on an ordinary American fighter. With this boxing that is exactly the main draw.

It is an upgraded F-5N. The plus sign marks a machine after rebuilding with new digital avionics, which extended the service of the Tigers with the US Navy as training opponents.

A reserve aggressor squadron of the US Navy based in Florida. It flies single-seat F-5Ns and one two-seat F-5F and is among the most recognizable units precisely because of the colorful finishes of its machines.

Gluing it together itself is manageable for a moderately advanced modeler. The paint is the more demanding part: aggressor camouflage has sharp irregular transitions, so masks or shaped masking putty pay off.
