Violet Grey — an acrylic paint by AK interactive, the Artistic Dense range

Violet Grey is a gray with a distinct violet undertone. On the palette it looks inconspicuous, but it is precisely such broken tones that decide whether a shadow on a figure will look natural. Violet is the complementary color to yellow, so on a white, beige, sandy or flesh area it gives a shadow that does not gray off into dirt. It is an acrylic paint thinnable with water, not a lacquer and not an enamel.

Use

• Cool shadows on white and light fabric — a white shirt, a winter cape, canvas. Pure gray looks dirty here, while a violet gray stays clean.
• Underpainting beneath flesh tones and shadows in places where the skin should show through toward blue-violet.
• Unifying gray uniforms and vehicles. A drop into a basic gray tone immediately pulls the shade out of flat neutrality.
• Brush against airbrush: denser acrylics are easier to control with a brush, where you build the color up in layers. For an airbrush the paint has to be thinned and the spray tried out on a spare part.
• With white, mix toward fine lilac and gray-blue tones for highlights; with a darker gray, by contrast, toward deeper shadows.

Who it is for

For painters of figures and miniatures who work with colored shadows and do not want to rely only on darkening the base tone. The range is built for this way of working — it counts on a small format, a brush and gradual layering, and for it the manufacturer also offers a medium and a drying retarder of its own for longer work with wet paint. The volume of the package, the covering power and an equivalent according to RAL or FS are not stated here.
