Taller dry grass

Five millimeters is a noticeable jump against the lowest variants of the line. Whereas short growth only suggests that an area is not bare, this length already forms volume in a scene: the tufts cast shade, cover the lower edge of objects and give the terrain depth. Use them where nobody mows the grass, that is along fences, in ditches, on embankments, among ruins and around abandoned buildings. They also serve well to cover places where a base meets modeled terrain.

The color and what it means

A light beige tone is read by the eye immediately as grass dried up at the close of summer. That information carries over to the whole scene, so a single decision about the color of the growth settles the season as well as the climate of the scene. An interesting effect comes from mixing in a few green tufts: dried grass with green shoots at the root looks alive and removes the impression of a uniform carpet that plagues scenes with a single shade.

Working with the material

A tuft is not untouchable. With your fingers it can be teased out into a wider and sparser clump, with scissors shortened or cut at an angle, so that the growth does not end in a horizontal line all on one level. If you want to create the impression of grass bent by the wind, pass a damp brush over the settled clumps in one direction and let them dry in that position. The whole can be fixed with weakly thinned matte varnish applied with a sprayer from a distance.
