Creating a convincing scaled surface by hand means hours of cutting. EVA foam scales - Shield from the Green Stuff World brand shortens that work: the scales have a uniform shield shape, so regular, readable rows can be built from them.
A shield outline evokes plated, crafted-looking protection rather than organic skin. It comes into its own on pauldrons and shoulder pieces of armor, on helmets, belts, shields or on the back of a costume, where a regular rhythm should be visible.
