Only a flat tool will keep a surface on a model flat. Abrasive paper held between the fingers follows the shape beneath it, so where a plane is meant to appear it sands a shallow hollow and rounds the edges off instead. This plate is flat and large, so the sanding surface stays flat along the whole length of a stroke and covers a wider piece of surface at once. It finds a use in leveling the joints of a fuselage, in leveling dried filler and in preparing extensive surfaces before painting.
The number in the name gives the grit, that is, the fineness of the abrasive. Six hundred is a medium to fine value: the plate does not take material off in large amounts, but it does smooth out the marks left by coarser sanding and leaves the surface ready for finishing. For taking a large excess off it is slow, while for polishing it is still coarse. Its place is in the middle of the sequence, that is, after coarse leveling and before moving on to finer grits.
Use long, even strokes in one direction and press only lightly. Heavier pressure will not speed the work up; it only deepens the scratches you then have to sand out again. Check the progress against the light often, as it shows unevenness more reliably than looking from above. Keep removing the dust, because once caught between the grains it starts to scratch the surface. Wash and degrease the finished surface, and only then apply the primer or the paint.
A model, a kit and filler are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise. The manufacturer gives the dimensions of the plate, the material of the abrasive and whether it is suitable for wet sanding.
